Hybrid systems – grid-connected solar + battery

Hybrid solar storage systems refer to home and commercial solar systems which are connected to the grid and a battery. During the day, the house or premises will use the solar power first. Any excess power generated by the solar panels during the day will charge the battery for use at night or during low light days.

Off-grid systems – battery only, no grid connection

Off-grid systems have no grid connection which means all the power comes from the solar panels and battery. Off-grid systems need higher capacity than grid-connected systems and have a number of additional complexities that need to be considered, such as inverter capability and energy management.

Are solar battery systems worth it?

Battery systems are becoming more and more viable, especially with the recent drop in the feed-in tariff for your unused power. The price of solar battery storage in Australia is also continually dropping, with some batteries now having a return of less than five years. Can I attach a solar battery to my existing solar panel system?

If you are producing more units from your solar system than you need, you can preserve the excess energy by adding a battery charger kit that allows the excess power to charge your battery rather than just going back to the grid for a small feed-in tariff. Do I need an off-grid solar panel system?

The installation of a fully off-grid solar system is usually only needed in areas where normal power is not available (remote locations) or where there is a substantial number of regular power outages. The reason for this is a true off-grid set up is very costly, as you need to be able to power everything at once. Most of the time, if you are looking to reduce your bills as much as possible with a battery system, it actually makes sense to be connected to the grid as a failsafe.

If the battery is fully charged, how long will it last? 

The longevity of a fully charged battery powering your home or business depends on what you are running on it. If you have a few lights on and you’re watching TV, doing some cooking, then the battery will last about 12-13 hours. But as soon as you add a big power consumer, like air-conditioning or a dishwasher, you are going to drain the battery much more quickly. With heavy use a small battery might last only two to three hours.
